Abstract

This article presents 25 unpublished letters of Professor Hanif Naqvi sent to Dr Shams Badayuni. The letters are replete with useful information about many Urdu couplets and single poetical lines being used as sayings. Many writers yearned to edit these collections of Urdu couplets remained anonymous. To know the poets’ names, the writer of this articles initiated queries at times to Mr Naqvi to know as he was then planning to edit such couplets remained anonymous. The letters contain insights of Mr Naqvi how he helped the editor to reach the right poet. Many couplets remained unknown for which letters have many suggestions. Sometimes letters contain very rare and interesting information. One of the letters in this article show how the issue of translation of Mirza Ghalib’s Charagh-e dair by Kali Das Gupta Raza surfaced.
