Abstract

This articles aims at highlighting motives behind Urdu novel Umra-o Jaan-ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. It was the novel of Qari Sarfaraz Husain Azmi’s Urdu novel Shahid-e Raana and particularly his conceptions of courtesans which paved the way for Ruswa to oppose through his novel. In his novel, Azmi’s did not oppose courtesans getting married with noble men. On the other hand, Ruswa opposed it. Both the novelists portrayed their women characters yearning to live their lives as noble women. Azmi and Ruswa are on the same page that courtesans should not be allowed to mix up with other female family members.
