Abstract

This article aims at highlighting the Urdu works of Aloys Sprenger as he was one of the first western scholars to admit openly the influence of Islamic culture on the Medieval West. In the year 1845 I founded an illustrated journal in Delhi on the pattern of Penny Magazine. Its title was Qiran’s Sa’dain that means the conjunction of two auspicious planets, Jupiter and Venus, which referred to the Occident and Orient. It was the first attempt of its kind. During the thirteen years he spent in the East, he enjoyed the vast opportunities to collect works of literature and he was employed by the government to catalogue the libraries of Lucknow and two years he travelled in Egypt. His studies of Urdu and Persian manuscripts are as valuable today as is his superb collection of manuscripts which is now housed in Berlin.
