Imaginary Urdu letters, essay-like letters

Abstract

This article attempts to discuss the varying nature of letters written by many known Urdu writers and poets for which letter writers had no visible and certain recipients in their minds. In doing so, these imaginary essay-like letters were divided into four types. It dispels sweeping generalization about the types of Urdu literary letters by scholars and writers of literary genres. It also finds information and issues which the writers did not share in their frequent writings for which he or she is known for. Citing examples of the Urdu imaginary letters, excerpts have been included from Abul Kalam Azad in Ghubar-e Khatir, M Aslam in Khat ka jawab, Muhammad Yonus in Qaidi ke khutoot, Majnoo Gorakhpuri in Perdesi ke khutoot, Dr Muhammad Baqir in Landani dost ke naam khutoot and Kishwar Naheed in Buri aurat ke khutoot.
